Chelsea Manager Maresca Dismisses Man City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk linking him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the persistent rumours surrounding his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in June 2024, is under contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extension option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions After Previous Comments
Maresca's latest statement come in the wake of he described a recent 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had fueled widespread talk of a potential disagreement between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had since spoken with the club's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about different things. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The Italian did confirm he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back ahead of schedule, possibly available for a fixture against Aston Villa later this month.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter publicly, there has also been no apology forthcoming, creating the disagreement unresolved.
The atmosphere during these media briefings has grown increasingly strained, leading to concerns it could impact what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the season.
Chelsea's sporting position is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the League Cup last four, and can secure a favourable Champions League draw with strong results in their final matches.
The lingering question is whether this off-field dynamic might eventually affect a team that was beginning to look settled.
