Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Spectators
The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
Offseason Issues and Media Attention
This event comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a central figure in a streaming series that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the globe’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its recent championship drought.
