No Fewer Than 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghana Armed Forces Enlistment Event
At least 6 individuals have lost their lives amid a stampede at a military recruitment event held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The Wednesday's "devastating" event appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and rushed into the gates," announced a statement from Ghana's armed forces.
Twenty-two additional individuals were hurt, including 5 who remain in critical condition.
A large crowd had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, Accra, with the hope of joining the armed forces.
Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of about 32%, the most recent official data show, and such enlistment drives typically attract large crowds and often result in disorderly situations.
The closing date to apply for this event was prolonged for a week to allow for additional candidates, as a number had faced challenges in the application procedure.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the crush took place ahead of the event's scheduled start of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.
The nation's leader President John Mahama has visited the wounded in medical care.
Order has been restored, and the enlistment process has now begun.
