Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
